The old C-HR was quirky, compact, and honestly a bit niche in the U.S. The new one is a very different story. The Toyota 2026 C-HR returns as a fully electric compact SUV for the U.S., not as a small gas crossover revival. Toyota says it brings back the C-HR nameplate as an all-new battery electric vehicle with standard dual-motor all-wheel drive, a coupe-like profile, and much stronger performance than the last version.
That alone changes the tone. This is not a mild refresh. It is more like a full identity reset.
The biggest update is simple: the Toyota 2026 C-HR is now a BEV. Toyota says the new model uses a 74.7-kWh battery, comes standard with dual-motor AWD, and makes 338 combined system horsepower. Toyota also lists an EPA-estimated range of up to 287 miles on the SE trim and 273 miles on the XSE trim.
That puts it in a much more serious spot than the old car. It is no longer the odd little style-first crossover people forgot about. It is now part of Toyota's growing EV lineup, sitting alongside the updated bZ and new bZ Woodland in the U.S.
If anyone still thinks this is just a design-heavy crossover with modest performance, the numbers say otherwise. The official Toyota C-HR specs include 338 horsepower, standard AWD, and a manufacturer-estimated 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds. Toyota also says the front and rear eAxles produce 198 lb-ft and 125 lb-ft of torque respectively.
That is quick. Very quick for a compact Toyota crossover, actually. The platform also gets suspension tuning changes, anti-roll bar stiffness tweaks, and a low center of gravity thanks to the underfloor battery placement.
Range matters, obviously. Toyota says the SE trim reaches up to 287 miles of EPA-estimated range, while the XSE comes in at 273 miles. Charging support also looks more modern than some buyers might expect. Toyota says the new C-HR includes a North American Charging Standard port, supports Plug & Charge, and can go from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes under ideal fast-charging conditions.
The onboard AC charger is rated at 11 kW, and Toyota says the vehicle can charge on Level 1, Level 2, and DC fast-charging setups. A standard NACS-to-CCS adapter is also included.
That part matters because EV buyers are no longer only looking at range. They are looking at how annoying charging will be in real life.
The cabin is not bare-bones at all. Toyota says even the base SE gets a 14-inch touchscreen, a fully digital gauge cluster, dual wireless phone chargers, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, blind spot monitoring, front and rear parking assist with automatic braking, rain-sensing wipers, a power liftgate, and 18-inch wheels.
The XSE adds 20-inch wheels, driver memory seat, power passenger seat, panoramic view monitor, lane change assist, and traffic jam assist. Toyota also says the interior uses soft-touch materials, customizable ambient lighting, and available synthetic suede with SofTex trim on higher grades.
So yes, the 2026 Toyota C-HR features list is stronger than many people probably expected.

From the outside, the C-HR still leans hard into that sloped, sporty silhouette. That usually makes people nervous about room inside. Toyota says cargo space comes in at up to 25.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and expands to 59.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The overall vehicle dimensions are listed at 177.9 inches long, 73.6 inches wide, 63.8 inches tall, with a 108.3-inch wheelbase.
That is useful because coupe-like styling can sometimes turn into practicality problems. Here, Toyota is clearly trying to say, relax, it still works as a real compact SUV.
No surprise here. Going electric and adding this much performance was never going to be cheap. Toyota's official February 18 announcement says the Toyota C-HR price USA starts at $37,000 before dealer processing and handling charges.
Cars.com later reported more precise retail pricing including destination: $38,450 for the SE and $40,450 for the XSE, both including a $1,450 destination charge.
So yes, this new C-HR is much pricier than the old gas model. But it is also a completely different product now.
Toyota is not making people wait too long. In its official U.S. announcement, Toyota said the new C-HR is expected to arrive in U.S. dealerships in March 2026.
That means the new Toyota C-HR release date is basically now for the U.S. market, which is helpful for buyers who were worried this might be one of those "shown now, sold much later" launches.
Toyota is clearly using this model to fill a sporty EV niche in its lineup. The company describes it as a compact electric SUV with a more athletic stance and sharper personality than the bZ. Cars.com also frames it as a subcompact SUV alternative that returns after a three-year hiatus with far more power and a much nicer overall package.
That gives the Toyota compact SUV 2026 lineup a more layered feel. Buyers who want something smaller and more style-driven than the bZ may find this one more interesting.
And honestly, that may be the whole point.

A few things jump out. First, Toyota did not play it safe. Second, the specs are genuinely strong for the segment. Third, the feature list feels well-equipped even in the base trim. And fourth, the return of the C-HR name is not nostalgic at all. It is a full reboot.
